The 10 Coolest Legend of Zelda Bosses

The Zelda franchise is known for having some of the best bosses in gaming, and many are among the coolest looking as well.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is sure to give fans a whole new set of incredible bosses in a series known for its thrilling boss battles. While the series has an expansive list of bosses, some are visually more interesting than others.

Some Zelda bosses do a fantastic job of appealing to fans' inner child with designs that inspire a sense of awe in players of all ages. Of course, the coolest bosses in the franchise also are mechanically enticing to face; it's difficult to fondly remember a boss who is far too easy to take down.

Tentalus might be the best water-themed boss in Zelda, an archetype for which the series has often been criticized. The tentacle monster gives an exciting blend of Kraken and Medusa for a humanoid/squid hybrid that makes for an epic aquatic boss.

Tentalus, of course, has the classic "Zelda eye" that signifies a pronounced weak spot in the boss, but it manages to have that classic spot without detracting from the design. As clear as Tentalus's weakness is, it's also clear how cool the Skyward Sword squid monster looked.

Zelda games are no stranger to insect bosses, but the frozen Colgera from Tears of the Kingdom may be the best of them. The frozen boss of the Wind Temple has a terrifying but iconic look, resembling an ant lion larvae with five eyes.

However, there's also a cool factor at play with the giant icicle-like mandibles that's hard to ignore. Colgera makes for a visually exciting boss, and the fight is a fun ride, one of the best in Tears of the Kingdom.

It's no secret that Ocarina of Time is widely considered one of the best Legend of Zelda games, and the boss battles are a major part of the game's success as an all-time classic. Among the best bosses in the game is the elemental duo of Twinrova.

Todoroki from My Hero Academia has reminded people how cool the combination of fire and ice can be. The final stage of the Spirit Temple battle with Twinrova's merged form is a classic part of the franchise.

While the Calamity Ganon is the only mandatory boss in the open-world classic, Thunderblight Ganon may be the hardest Breath of the Wild boss in its main storyline. Urbosa and Vah Naboris's storyline culminated in a terrifying boss in both visuals and gameplay.

The wild red mane of Thunderblight Ganon highlights its connection to the Gerudo champion, and its interesting asymmetrical head gives its design the appearance of the thunderbolt. The extremely fast boss battle is by far the most memorable of the four blights for multiple reasons.

Wind Waker might be one of the best Zelda games for casual players, but the ease of the game doesn't stop it from having great bosses. However, Gohma, a reoccurring boss in the franchise and the first boss in Wind Waker, may be the game's most memorable.

Ocarina of Time succeeded with nearly every temple in the game, but the shadow temple was arguably the best. The dungeon concluded with possibly the strangest boss in the franchise and one of the most interesting: Bongo Bongo.

The one-eyed monster's disembodied hands attacking the player while they stand in a giant bongo arena is the peak of whacky Zelda boss design. Bongo Bongo is the perfect example of a boss being cool and having interesting gameplay without taking itself too seriously, one of the great charms of Zelda bosses.

It's undeniable that skeletons make for cool enemies, but giant skeleton monsters take that philosophy to another level. Stallord from Twilight Princess is just that, an unrelenting skeleton monster with one of the coolest designs in the franchise.

Stallord isn't just visually interesting; the skeletal titan utilizes Twilight Princess's Spinner, one of the more unique items in the classic Wii game. Everything from the fight's mechanics to the surrounding arena to Stallord itself makes for a nearly perfect mid-game boss battle.

Skyward Sword had many issues that fans have rightly criticized it for, and there's a lot that other Zelda games can improve from Skyward Sword's failings. However, one thing that the Wii game was more than successful at was its boss designs.

Koloktos was arguably the best boss in Skyward Sword and one of the best bosses in Zelda history. The Ancient Cistern boss may have the usual obvious weak spot that many bosses in the franchise are guilty of, but the design and method for defeating Koloktos are brilliant.

So many unique factors are at play with Ocarina of Time's Phantom Ganon that it's hard not to love the boss. Making Ganon ride a horse like Link is a wonderful addition that gives Phantom Ganon the "evil ghost horserider" trope that's hard not to love.

However, the most memorable part of the battle is the mechanic with the paintings. Ganon jumping in and out of artwork to attack Link gives a horror movie vibe that's rare for Zelda games, and any gamer would be forgiven for getting jump-scared a bit playing the Phantom Ganon fight for the first time.

While giant monsters and ghouls can make for wonderful bosses, almost nothing beats the anime-like impact of two sworders hashing it out on the battlefield. Demon Lord Ghirahim allows Link to go one-on-one with a fellow sworder, making for Skyward Sword's coolest fight.

While the old Wii controls were admittedly finicky, the concept of the human-like incarnation of a demon sword wielding its own sword is a heck of a boss battle, and Ghirahim is arguably more satisfying than Demise because he feels like the perfect matchup for Link.
